So you have decided to seek therapy? Well, good for you! This process can feel awkward, new, uncertain, frustrating, or a myriad of other ways. Whether new to counseling or an experienced counselee, finding the right counselor is vital to making progress in the direction you want to go. There are thousands of options. Take a few deep breaths, seeking help can be anxiety inducing, but know you are doing the right thing for yourself and your relationships in pursuing health
Here are a few first steps to finding a good fit:
First – Now, think of the main reason you are seeking counseling. Is it for personal growth, depression, anxiety, relational stress? Regardless of the reason, it is important to find a counselor who has experience working in your area of concern.
Second – When you think of yourself receiving counseling, how do you want to receive services? Would you like to be in person or virtual or are you comfortable with either? It is important to know that many counselors have been unable to offer in person services consistently due to the ongoing pandemic.
Third – Picture the setting in your head as well as the person you would be comfortable talking to, what kind of characteristics do they have? Are they friendly and encouraging or professional and quiet, old or young, male or female? Do you want a cozy environment or modern or something in between? This mental image of setting and person will help to narrow your search.
Fourth – Consider your budget and decide how much you can spend a month on counseling. Check your insurance card to see if you have any Mental Health coverage in your plan.
Fifth – Finally, start your search. Psychology Today is a great place to begin because it offers search filters for counselors near you. However, searching online for counselors in your area via your favorite search engine is also a great option. Take your time and remember you may have to set up a few consultations before you find a good fit.
